Bridge is based in the East Villageβacross the East River from Long Island City where Amazon planned to get $3 billion in government tax breaks to build a new office. It promised 25k βhigh payingβ jobs. Notably, one in five store fronts in the East Village are empty. The reasons for this vacancy vary. Iβm not sure if Amazon abandoning its new HQ was a win for America but a loss for the East Village or maybe a win for both. I wish to see my local community grow and America grow. I hope NYC can ...

Amazon will boost its two-hour delivery service to customers by building more Whole Foods, reports todayβs WSJ. Amazon also offers a 30 minute grocery pickup. The retail future is increasingly about showing real-time stock online and encouraging customers to order it for delivery or pick it up. When Amazon gives faster delivery to more customers, those are often the same customers as those of indie stores. With these moves, Amazon is just eating more businessβ customers.

Amazon is shaping up to be the new Walmartβpaying its employees the bare minimumβand on top of that kill 10x more jobs than Walmart. Todayβs WSJ shares that Amazon employees on average get just a bit more than Home Depot employees. While cities touted competing for the new Amazon HQ as a way to get 1,000s of high-paying jobs, the facts are Amazon is a cheapstake employer that gives most profits back to its Wall St. investors.

Are you a local shop? Then these stats here from Carol Schroeder show why youβre important to your community.
$48 of every $100 stays in the community when you shop at an indie store. $14 of every $100 stays in the community when you shop at a chain store. Indie stores contribute: 3X MORE :)
For every $10 million in sales at a brick and mortar store, they employ 47 people. For every $10 million in sales at Amazon, it employs 19 people. Indie stores contribute: 2X MORE to local employment :)

"Fifty percent of men and 40 percent of women indicated they like human interaction in brick-and-mortar locations. Furthermore, about a third of women weren't comfortable with the notion that human jobs were eliminated in favor of technology."
This statistic (from TotalRetail) suggests that many consumers want people involved in e-commerce. Fortunately, that's Bridge's plan: merge e-commerce with Main Street businesses.
Imagine there is a company that does to bread what Bridge does to retail? There is: La Boulangerie and its founder seek to help resuscitate the French bread business. I enjoyed reading the parallels between the bread business and our retail industry. Both have seen manufacturers encroach up the food chain closer to the end consumer. Both have seen a degradation in the quality of the product. And both have seem a reduction in jobs that hurts the local community.

When the internet became poplar, many people thought this would lead to more people living outside of expensive cities and metropolitan regions. Instead, there's a rush to move downtown and most e-commerce jobs are being created close to cities.

From Sunday's NY Times, this article highlights how retail is at a tipping point with the shift from brick & mortar to e-commerce. While it is a big concern to all, we have you covered: Bridge has helped its retailers process 32% more in sales over the last year vs the year before. Bridge's mobile retail software has seen an increase of 55% year over year. As the retail landscape continues to shift, we are moving right along with it.
Speaking of supporting our local communities, the Times magazine this weekend has an issue about working class jobs, automation, and the topics.

Do you shop on Amazon? How about gilt or other online-only sites? Today's WSJ reports how shopping at some websites may be hurting your neighbors and fellow Americans by getting them fired. Almost 400 department stores are going to close across America--resulting in 1,000s of jobs being cut. I hope that our neighbors quickly get new jobs in what may come next. In the meantime, I encourage us to shop online at local websites and support our communities. Shopping online locally helps support local...
