Do you visit Atlanta for the tradeshows? The creator of AmericasMart, John Portman, just passed away at 93. He was unique in that he designed and developed many of his properties. That is extremely rare. It would be like Nike owning gyms; one is normally just one part of the ‘food chain’. Starting in 1961, Portman helped revitalize downtown Atlanta. What’s also interesting is his business partner: it was his old college professor. He co-wrote several books and was even the topic of a movie. He ...

Housewares is a $42b industry, with speciality stores making up about $4b of this. Online entities like Amazon and Wayfair now make up a slightly larger share than all those speciality stores combined. How did a few wall st backed publicly traded companies outgun 1,000s of indie stores? Us indies have to keep innovating to roll back the tide.

"Websites are dead. The future belongs to platforms." This was my take away from a meeting with Coton Colors in Atlanta. A Coton Colors marketing director recalled how when she was at McGraw Hill publishers were aghast when someone said "Printed textbooks are dead." I think that declaring anything dead sounds a little dramatic, but it can be prescient and help people understand a larger trend.
The attached line chart graphic is something that I did a few months back. One of the chart lines ...

Imagine there is a company that does to bread what Bridge does to retail? There is: La Boulangerie and its founder seek to help resuscitate the French bread business. I enjoyed reading the parallels between the bread business and our retail industry. Both have seen manufacturers encroach up the food chain closer to the end consumer. Both have seen a degradation in the quality of the product. And both have seem a reduction in jobs that hurts the local community.

Try, Then Buy? Amazon’s Move Is Part of a Shopping Trend
Read the story from today's NY Times. And it isn't only fashion sites and Amazon that are doing this. Jewelry stores are also getting into the act. Is Tabletop next?
Full text: When I was a child, I would watch my grandmother try on dresses and coats she had brought home on “appro” (or approbation) from Mrs. Downey’s boutique in Dungarvan, Ireland: deciding, at her leisure, what to buy and what to return. Who knew that, decades later, “appro,...
