LVMH is taking a stab at the online luxury market with 24 Sévres, the new shopping site and app. Definitely a competitor to Amazon in the luxury fashion arena. It might even eat their lunch in this category.
PARIS — Ian Rogers, chief digital officer of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, sat in his sunlit office on Avenue Montaigne last month, alongside a large cactus with a mélange of Pucci-pattern skateboards and black and ...

Main Street has been under fire for decades, shares today's Times. Going back to the 1930s, indie businesses have been competing with larger businesses that buy in bulk and are better connected to the global supply chain. In fact, MSRP pricing was started in the 1930s to help mom and pop stores fight back against growing chain stores.
Notably, the story's headline of the "Myth of Main Street" is misleading. The story acknowledges that Main Street existed, it's just that its been under fire for...

When retailers think of their competition, they often think of domestic players. Well, now foreign retailers can be added to that list. Today's WSJ reports that import duties have been reduced and it's now easy to buy up to $800 in goods from abroad. For example, previously a $300 purchase would have from $100 to $300 of duties added. A $300 purchase became $400 to $600. Now zero would be added.
Indy retailers can take advantage of this by bringing in more goods from overseas to sell to their ...

How often is Le Creuset mentioned on the Time's home page? Probably not too often - and yet this mention isn't likely the one the storied kitchenware brand wanted: it's about misleading customers. The biggest abusers of customers: online entities like Wayfair, Overstock, and Amazon.
In contrast, indy mom and pop stores don't have the lax morals, chutzpah, nor technical ability to pull the cons these big online players do.
This story is actually good reason to shop with your local store.
If web sales are only 5% of Targets sales, why is Target hustling to adapt for the web? Answer: much more than 5% of sales are researched first online and then bought in store. Some stats claim that 50% of large, in-store sales are first researched online. After all, can you imagine buying a stereo, car, or appliance without first researching it online? 5% may actually be more like 50% and that's why retail players are battling and investing online.
Side note: I'd forgotten that Amazon ran ...

What does a running store have in common with a home goods boutique? Both are struggling to compete against vendors selling direct. Nike is increasingly hurting indy athletic shops by selling direct. In the home goods world, many brands are doing the same to their retailers.
When you read the article about Nike, many of these same quotes could come from players in our home goods industry:
