While walking down Broadway last weekend, I discovered this plaque regarding Gorham, a producer of fine metalware and flatware. The plaque shares that Gorham was located in this first-ever mixed-use building built in 1883. Notably, Gorham is still producing beautiful products today and is a member of Bridge's Product Syncing service. Ironically, the brand's modern-day showroom was just seven blocks away until very recently. (This building is at 19th St. and Broadway and the Lifetime Brands ...

NYT: Amazon claims to not be responsible for what it sells
Amazon sells you an item, gets it from its warehouse, and delivers it to you—but says that it is not a seller, shares Moira Weigel in this past weekend’s Times. This shields it from accountability to customers that receive harmful goods. Amazon is using a similar excuse that Facebook and social media platforms use regarding harmful content: don’t hold us accountable; blame our users, even if we provide the service ...

Some people like to sit on the sofa and eat Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I roll my eyes at this because I’m very different: I like to read the Wall St. Journal’s Christopher Mims …while eating an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s on the sofa. This past weekend, Mr. Mims suggested companies may be reassessing where they source products, some even considering more domestic production. The motivation for this started a few years ago with the U.S.-China trade war, ...

This past weekend on the way to Florida to visit my brothers, I read about Squarespace’s advertising history. (Read the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/13/business/how-did-squarespace-know-podcasts-would-get-this-big.html). In 2009, Anthony Casalena, the founder of Squarespace, paid $20,000 to advertise on a tech podcast. While that was a lot for a small, young company (Casalena had started his business just six years earlier in a dorm room in 2003), Casalena said the ...

Last February e-commerce company Shopify Inc. replaced the “Ottawa, Canada” dateline that began its press releases and earnings reports with a strange new one: “Internet, Everywhere.” The geographical shift came at the insistence of Shopify’s founder and chief executive officer, Tobi Lütke, who tends to view such matters through the prism of cold, hard logic. In May 2020, only a few months into the pandemic, he’d made the early, seemingly rash decision to...

When I was 24-years old, a market research company sent me to Philadelphia to survey potential users about a new offering from General Electric Finance. Your first question may be: "Wait, Jason was once 24?" Your second may be: "GE had a consumer finance arm?" Yes, and yes. GE was once a conglomerate with its hands in many industries, from television to nuclear reactors to jet engines. GE, like Toshiba and Johnson & Johnson, has since shrunk. But the era of the ...

There’s a hidden month in the calendar: the 13th month. Those that follow this calendar often are very productive and lead successful ventures--as well as vex their significant others. What is the 13th month? It’s the sum of working Saturdays each week for about a year. There are 30 days in a month, and about 52 Saturdays in a year. In fact, there are almost 14 months in a year if you work Sundays, too. The 13th month is a calendar that most professional athletes, scholars, and...
