When we talk about supporting local businesses, we often don't think about this on the macro level: countries. I love that Toyota is building its largest factory in the world in the United States. Those Kentucky-based jobs will help produce shopping at local businesses. Thank you Toyota and Kentucky.

Artists are an important part of local business. Today in the East Village I spotted Lee Erickson who is a local New York City water color painter. He's got some great pieces including 5th Ave. and Pete's Tavern on Irving Place. Prices range around $400. He also does commission work. Lee Erickson: 917-923-8832
Ps- ask him about his days as a deep sea diver

At the coffee shop this morning, we noticed this guide to local businesses here in the East Village. Created by the East Village Community Coalition, the little booklet has maps and lists neat spots including stores dedicated to sake and yarn (...not the same location!).
Shopping local at Annie Sloan paint shop in the East Village. Don't let the name fool ya. Lots of neat, re-purposed stuff in there including these bottle caps turned into magnets. Shop manager was super helpful and knowledgable.
Annie Sloan is at 122 East 7th St. Between 1st and 2nd ave., NYC
