Do you think that Dropbox is free? I thought so too until my 'free' account filled up and Dropbox wants me to pay $16/month--and $20/month if I want a 'team' account.
Dropbox's pricing page is a doctoral lesson in how to charge customers for oxygen.
Amazon is launching eyeglasses to help it better view your world, shares today’s WSJ. The ‘invite only’ strategy made me laugh. Oddly, our local Amazon delivery guy rings my doorbell by anything but invitation only. I don’t use Amazon, but he rings it daily when he has packages for other apartments. Alexa, please have your delivery people stop bothering neighbors. :)

Macy’s bought the retailer Story then closed Story’s flagship location. Hmm. The flagship’s door sign (shown here at 10th Ave. and 19th st. in NYC) says Story has 35 other locations. Notably, those are all inside other Macy’s. Aka: Macy’s likely bought Story to rearrange and/or fill excess space at its other mall locations. Apparently, Story wasn’t appealing enough to have two locations in NYC—which is not a good sign. I predict Macy’s purchase of Story was inflated, and likely a mistake. I ...

Amazon and Chinese companies have teamed up to bypass Main Street and ship goods directly to doorsteps. This is hurting American manufacturing as well as local city governments. To accomplish this, they're misleading Americans by putting out press releases that cherry-pick statistics.
Follow these 3 steps to see the issue at hand:
1. In an Amazon press release last week, Amazon claimed:
"Independent third-party sellers – primarily small and medium-sized businesses – ...

I went into a small shop in New York City yesterday and admired all their nice tableware. It offered mugs, cups, plates, drinking glasses, and vases—all items that are great for gift registries.
The store was empty. I thought it may be a good time ask the store manager if the store offered an online registry. He replied "yes." I was surprised because there was no signage in the store that said it offered a gift registry. I shared with him what Bridge is and explained that we...

Maker Scarlett Markham is actually a former Parkleigh employee! She developed her line, Flour Pail Kids while working here. We thought our customers would be as amused by it as we are by Scarlett. Her quirky sense of humor mixes nostalgic icons with the edge of today to inspire her work. What could be more full of Rochester spirit than a tiny Genny Beer pin? Her Rochester icon t-shirts are also a stand out among others around town. When Scarlett isn’t designing or doing one of her jack-of-all-...

Is Amazon a 'Retail Hacker'?
Amazon may be spying on your business. It may be crawling your website, checking your prices, and then stealing your customers. If this sounds creepy, it is.
Every week over the last few years, I have found Amazon-hosted bots crawling my 400+ retailers' web pages. In the example shown, I'm displaying a bot that crawls my site and its IP address (34.217.74.229). I look up its IP address (https://www.infobyip.com/ip-34.217.74.229.html) and we see that it's hosted at ...

What company in the tabletop industry has invested in a tech company? I don't know of one. I believe our industry should be doing what UPS does and investing in tech--and I'll explain why.
As today's WSJ shares, UPS has a venture capital arm and it has this because smart businesses know that most businesses are becoming more like: software businesses. Therefore, businesses have to ‘buy’ that know-how by investing in a tech company. UPS knows that it doesn't have the internal tech know-how to...

We have a new milestone: mobile orders exceeded desktop orders for the first time this past Saturday on Bridge. This is notable because desktop orders have historically beat mobile orders.
Shoppers choose the mobile route on Saturday because they are most likely out of the office and on the go. But why had mobile not trumped desktop before? We believe that mobile-based purchases are increasing as shoppers get more comfortable with mobile (aka they are making more mobile purchases for other ...

It started with just a few cards. Cordel Cordaro’s whimsical birds on greeting cards literally flew out of our MacKenzie-Childs store. Customers started talking about having his art in their homes and seeing it out in the community. We even heard touching stories about his commissioned work and the heartfelt thought that went into creating special art for Rochestarians. We realized we had a good fit on our hands and starting carrying his prints, ornaments, originals and art plack-its. Cordell ...
