From today's NY Times:
In the bizarre world of Internet βdiscounts,β inconsistent list prices can make it tough to figure out what a product is really worth.
Key Takeaways 1. Most people want convenience of e-commerce as opposed to price manipulation. 2. We should appreciate our industry for not engaging in these tacky practices. 3. We don't sell dog food.
How often is Le Creuset mentioned on the Time's home page? Probably not too often - and yet this mention isn't likely the one the storied kitchenware brand wanted: it's about misleading customers. The biggest abusers of customers: online entities like Wayfair, Overstock, and Amazon.
In contrast, indy mom and pop stores don't have the lax morals, chutzpah, nor technical ability to pull the cons these big online players do.
This story is actually good reason to shop with your local store.
What does a running store have in common with a home goods boutique? Both are struggling to compete against vendors selling direct. Nike is increasingly hurting indy athletic shops by selling direct. In the home goods world, many brands are doing the same to their retailers.
When you read the article about Nike, many of these same quotes could come from players in our home goods industry:
Below is a New York Times article from this past weekend. The article shares how major retailers are dynamically customizing their promotions based upon past customer purchases. Luxury home goods retailers could likely customize their offerings in a similar fashion. The strategy is akin to how election marketing is done. If someone drives a Prius, then they are likely to be a Democrat. As such, Democratic candidates are marketed to that person. What ...

Will fine china manufacturers and retailers offer 'secret' discounts?
This article below from today's NY Times shares how brands and retailers in our market are offering 'discreet' discounts. How do we act on this info below to compete?
August 1, 2009 High-End Retailers Offering More Discounts
By STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM Scott Stuart was at the Bloomingdaleβs store in Manhattan when a salesman sidled up to him, said a private sale was under way and offered him a discount on the slacks he was inspecting.
The message below was sent out to retailers yesterday by the linens brand Sferra. I was intrigued by how open they were about their credit line. Excerpt: "...We have over $3 million outstanding on our line and an interest charge of $15,000 per month falls right to the bottom line. Our "affordable luxury" pricing policy affords no financing of past due amounts."

Free Shipping Offers From Online Merchants Will Increase
A recent article in Advertising Age questions whether free shipping from websites may be less common due to rising fuel costs. I believe free shipping with and without conditions will increase. Free shipping has more to do with getting around MSRP than actual shipping costs. For a retailer to cut out free shipping, theoretically the free shipping would have to account for 50% of an item's price thereby canceling out any profit for the ...

Discounting and Margins on Home Goods Products
The retailer LCR Collection called me today and expressed its concern that many customers request discounts. This discount is often 10%, and the store offered an idea to protect the retailer's margin: instead of retailers charging 100% of wholesale, they should charge 120%. In other words, a $50 wholesale product would not retail for $100 but instead be $110. This would allow the retailer 'space' to discount the item by 10%, and keep their margin.
