THIN AND SIMPLE says it all, a perfect moniker for Pampa Bay’s latest juggernaut, a throwback to the shapes and looks the company achieved in stainless steel, its one-time material of choice, a decade ago. In May 2020, only a few months into the pandemic, he’d made the early, seemingly rash decision to...

Stacy Mitchell heads up the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, which seeks to stop monopolies from hurting our local communities. Read today’s Times piece about the movement:
Retail Dive gives us six reasons via six statistics:
1. 100 stores The number of Macy's locations closed since August 2016, as well as the number of stores that off-price retailer Ross opened in 2019 alone
2. $19 billion Projected off-price sales by 2021
3. $20.4 billion The amount department store sales have dropped over the past five years
4. $14 billion The amount in sales that Costco's Kirkland Signature private label outpaced all of Macy's nationwide sales last year

Nordstrom stock is down 52% in the last 12 months. Only Macy’s stock performs worse in the S&P 500 retail index.
It’s clear that Nordstrom should not have bought HautLook in 2011 and Trunk Club in 2014. In 2016, Nordstrom wrote down the value of Trunk Club by half of its $350m purchase. That’s $175m in value it desperately needed to spend elsewhere to compete with Amazon. Each million dollar mistake today results tens of millions in lost opportunity next year. Mistakes have exponential ...
